6th Grade Pre-Athletics Information
Purpose of Pre-Athletics:
This course is a must for any student wishing to become involved in athletics during their career in GISD schools. The main focus of the Pre-Athletics program is to provide students with a preview of upcoming UIL sports in which they will be eligible to participate as 7th graders and to prepare them for the expectations associated with all aspects of GISD athletics.
In addition, we will be promoting a high standard of excellence and achievement both in the classroom and on the field of play. We expect our student athletes to conduct themselves as positive role models and be the best, well behaved students in our school. Students will also be introduced to concepts of UIL academic requirements and how they affect extracurricular participation. By introducing these concepts early, we feel that our student athletes will see future rewards as they pursue both their academic and athletic goals and dreams.
Components of Pre-Athletics:
- Character Development Curriculum - working to develop the person 1st, student 2nd, athlete 3rd.
- Weight lifting - introducing age appropriate lifts with the use of PVC bars and then light plates once students pass form tests. Lifts will include bench press, deadlift, hang clean and the squat.
- Form run and quick twitch program introduced
- Dynamic movements associated with all sports include, agility, explosive movement, flexibility, body control, etc.
- Health & Nutrition - the importance of sleep and nutrition will be discussed regularly.
- Sport-specific skills will be taught throughout the year as we progress through each sports season.
Desired outcomes
- Enroll in athletics in 7th grade and be able to demonstrate a higher level of skill and performance.
- Easy transition into the Strength and Conditioning program offered in the summer.
- Improvement in speed, strength, and conditioning.
- Knowledge of basic rules, fundamentals, skills, techniques, and schemes for each sport.
Students will learn the components of a successful athletic program:
- Learn to commit.
- Learn to work.
- Learn to compete.
- Learn to finish/win.
- Learn self-discipline.
- Learn to accept coaching.
- Learn to be part of a team.
- Learn to overcome adversity, develop a growth mindset/grit.

Uniforms
All pre-athletic students are required to wear a Wagner pre-athletic uniform during the class period. CenTex Shirt is our uniform provider. There are two ways to purchase, online or in-store. You may purchase more than one set if you like. If you purchase online, clothes will be passed out in class after school starts. Uniforms need to be ordered online prior to August 1st.

The store is located at 1911 N Austin Ave 103 Ste 103, Georgetown, TX 78626. Please do not write on your items, we will write names on all items. I would suggest calling ahead of time to confirm size availability.
- All athletes must have one set of clothes, but purchasing more is optional and highly recommended as we dress out daily.
- You do not need to bring clothes for the first two days of school. We will start dressing out the second week of school. If you do not have your uniform at that time, please bring appropriate athletic clothes to change into. In addition, your child will need tennis shoes (shoes that have laces, are tied and are unmarking) and socks each day.
Locks & Lockers
- We provide locks for all pre-athletes. Please do not purchase a lock. You are only allowed to use checked-out locks in the pre-athletic locker room.
- Students will be charged a $7.00 fee for missing or broken locks.
- Wagner and its coaches will not be responsible for missing items. Please lock up valuables!
Pre-Athletics Requirements, Rules and Procedures:
- Students should have a desire to participate in GISD athletics as a 7th
- Students must be in the dressing room by the tardy bell.
- Students have 4 minutes after the bell to get dressed. Dress out for class EVERYDAY! Do not horse play or socialize in the hallway.
- There will be NO HORSE PLAY, OR FIGHTING in the locker room or other PE/Athletic facilities. Fighting will result in an immediate referral to the principal’s office.
- Phones may not be used during class or in the locker rooms. Use of personal devices in the locker room will result in the item being turned into the office. Repeated use will result in character builders.
- Jewelry can NOT be worn during class. This includes earrings!
- All district and school rules, regulations and policies will be followed.
- Personal items must be locked in the provided lockers. Coaches will not be responsible for
Pre- Athletic Grading Policy:
60% of total grade: Participation, Skills Assessments, Weight Room form tests
40% of total grade: dressing out, written assignments, exit tickets
Excuse for Pre-Athletics Participation
For a student to be excused from participation, he/she must bring a note from their parent/guardian stating why activity should be limited or avoided. The note should include the student’s name, dates to be excused, the reason, a parent's phone number, and a parent/guardian's signature. We will make every attempt to adjust a workout so that the student can participate when a specific injury is involved. For example, the upper body when a lower body injury has occurred. The excuse will be honored for a maximum of 3 days if requested. Anything over 3 days will require a doctor’s excuse (the number of days, maximum of three, must be stated on the note). THE STUDENT MUST STILL DRESS OUT EVEN THOUGH AN EXCUSED NOTE IS PROVIDED. An alternate assignment will be provided.
